Aria

In my apartment window
an aria comes in the night
from the lonely streets
below. Her soulful voice
may not bring in fifteen
cents, but it winds itself
through my dreams.

Bargain Shelf

There’s life on the streets
like a young tender sun
and kindness on a bargain
shelf. In the cool breeze
of the morning it’s got love
just like anyplace else.

*

Ghetto Cross

In the misty darkness
children are living in all
kinds of hell hoping to
survive on what little love
is shared, smiling a Christ-
like forgiveness only a
ghetto cross can bear.

The Junkie Christ

The cracked lips and the methedrine
voice of the junkie Christ still sound
so close to my ear, draining me of
my hi-fi and every twenty that I own,
rain piercing my eyes like ice.
