the cats are gone

they’re fixing up
the abandoned house
across the street

they’ve pulled plywood
from the windows

replaced
the rotten roof

& applied fresh
paint to shingles

even a new front door
swings on its hinges

there are no more
twisted trees
there is no more
high grass

the stray cats are gone
& flocks of birds

cars slow down now
to get a look

at the large human trap
beneath the sun

death & the poetry machine

people always
complain
to me about
writer’s block

i don’t understand
this phenomenon

a while back
a friend gave me this
old typewriter

one night i decided to
place a skull
on top of it

resting where
the blank page
would be
the empty sockets
stared back at me
the jaw hovering
over the tiers of keys

maybe they wouldn’t be
lost for words
if this skinless head
greeted them
when they sat down
to write

but no, they neither
see death
nor
life

*

magnus opus

he
hanged
himself
using
a
stack
of
his
own
books
as
a
platform

what
is
poetry
compared
to
a
silent
blue
tongue?
